Dr. Ernie T. Hughes
Brother Ernie Hughes, Ph.D. is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Advancement for Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center SUAREC. In this role, he provides leadership in a team effort for all advancement and provides overall leadership and management for the Division of Institutional Advancement which includes annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, donor records and research, stewardship, major and planned gifts, and capital solicitation programs. Previously, Dr. Hughes served as Executive Director of the Southern University Foundation where he provided leadership in the development and management of the Southern University Foundation’s $60 million dollar tax-exempt municipal bond project (third party financing) that constructed and renovate various infrastructure projects on the campuses of Southern University at Baton Rouge and Shreveport. The project included the following: the football stadium, baseball field house, student housing complex, office buildings and intramural sports complex. Provide leadership in the design, development and construction of the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center’s $5 million Southwest Center in St. Landry Parish.
Dr. Hughes earned a B.B.A. in Finance and an MBA from Mississippi State University and a Ph.D. in Human Resource Development from Louisiana State University. Dr. Hughes has been active as a member of a variety of national and regional civic organizations and is the author of numerous publications and articles. He is recognized for his outstanding achievements as a civic and community leader, he has been a recipient of many awards including the Father of the Year for Jack and Jill, Inc.; Man of the Year, 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge, Inc; Distinguished Service Leadership Award of the Association of Extension Administrators, Top 40 Under 40, International Team Member of the Glywood Center, Dr. Hughes is a board member of the Partners for Progress, Capitol Area Cancer Services, the Academic Distinction Fund and the East Baton Rouge Parish Workforce Investment Board and a member of 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge and board chair of Capitol High Academy, a local public charter school. Dr. Hughes is married to Deidra and together they have three children, Troy, Deon, and Kaitlin. They reside in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
